What’s on offer

Competitions & divisions.

Three senior competitions, one association. Rather than fixing the number of grades in advance, we shape divisions around the teams that enter — so every team finds a level where games are genuinely competitive.

Mens

Played Monday nights. Graded into as many divisions as team numbers support — from the top grade down — so there’s a competitive home for every side.

Womens

Played Monday nights. Also graded into as many divisions as numbers support. The more teams that enter, the richer the competition — spread the word.

Senior Mixed New

Planned for Sunday evenings from 5:00pm — social-competitive, all levels, min. two female players on court. Running subject to team numbers. Register interest ↓

How divisions work. The Association targets a minimum of six teams per division and will create as many divisions as necessary to deliver an even and balanced competition. Divisions aren’t fixed before the season — they’re built from the teams that enter and the grading results, so no team is stranded in a grade that’s too strong or too weak.

Senior competitions play on Monday nights, with the new Senior Mixed comp on Sundays. Divisions and nights are subject to final team entries.

How it works

3-Stage Competition Model.

Our Summer senior competition uses the same structured three-stage model as the junior competition — designed to deliver fairer grading, better matches and stronger divisions. Rather than locking divisions on day one, the season opens with a grading phase that gives every team the chance to find the right level.

Refined for Summer 2026/27. The 3-Stage model was first piloted during the Winter 2026 season. Following the pilot, the Association undertook a formal review — in consultation with senior competition stakeholders and informed by community feedback. Modifications have been made to address competitiveness concerns identified during the pilot, and this refined model is what runs for Summer 2026/27 across both junior and senior competitions.
Stage 1
Grade
Rounds 1–2

Assess team strength and establish an initial grading position through mini-game matchups.

  • Mini-game format — multiple matchups per playing night
  • Teams enter their nominated grade — the Association does not pre-assign divisions
  • Association Operations may intervene only where numbers require it (minimum 6-team division floor) or to resolve uneven pools
  • No team movement during Stage 1
  • Initial grading assessment only — results don’t count toward the official ladder
Outcome: Association Operations establishes preliminary divisions based on observed team strength.
Stage 2
Validate
Rounds 3–5

Confirm preliminary grading using full-game results, with re-grading still possible to get the divisions right.

  • Regular game format — one game per playing night
  • Official ladder begins
  • Full WBA Playing Conditions apply
  • Re-grading reviewed after each round
  • Minimum six-team division floor maintained
Outcome: Final divisions confirmed for the remainder of the season. Grades lock at the completion of Round 5.
Stage 3
Season
Rounds 6–15

Run the official competition season in locked divisions — the real deal.

  • Regular game format — one game per playing night
  • Official ladder continues — every result counts
  • Finals eligibility applies
  • Divisions locked — no further grading adjustments
  • Teams compete for premiership points
Outcome: Final ladder positions determine finals qualification. Top 4 teams in each division advance.
PlayHQ Delivered via PlayHQ. All three stages of the competition are managed and delivered through PlayHQ. Fixtures, ladders, results and team information are available through your PlayHQ account or the PlayHQ app.
After Round 15

Finals Series

The top 4 teams in each division qualify for finals, played in the same locked divisions as Stage 3. Semi-finals run across two weeks, with winners advancing to the Grand Final.

Grand Final

No home-court advantage · venue allocation based on competition needs

Division floor: WBA aims to establish divisions of approximately six teams wherever participation numbers allow, and will create as many divisions as necessary for an even, balanced competition. Where a club or group enters two or more teams of similar strength, players should be distributed as evenly as practical across those teams.

New for 2026/27 · Launching soon

Introducing Senior Mixed.

A brand-new mixed senior competition on Sunday evenings from 5:00pm — social-competitive basketball for teams of mates, partners and colleagues. We’re building the season around your interest right now.

Senior Mixed is exactly what the name suggests — a mixed competition where every team fields a mix of male and female players, with a minimum of two female players on court at all times.

It sits alongside our Mens and Womens competitions for players who want something more social, less rigid, and inherently inclusive. One grade, no Mens-vs-Womens split, and a Sunday-evening slot that suits people with full-time jobs, families, and weekends already booked.

The only thing we need before locking in a start date is enough team interest. If that’s you — or even if you’re an individual still hunting for a team — the form below puts you on the launch list.

At a Glance

The shape of the season.

Indicative facts, all subject to confirmation as team numbers firm up.

Night Sunday from 5:00pm onwards
Teams Mixed min. 2 female players on court
Grades Single social-competitive, all levels
Finals Top 4 same as our other senior comps
Status Launching subject to team numbers
Framework Same BMF as the rest of WBA

Heads up: these are indicative. Final fee, exact tip-off times and season dates are confirmed once team interest is locked. Anyone on the EOI list gets the news first.

Register Interest

Help us launch the competition.

Your name on the list does two things: it tells us we have enough interest to commit, and it puts you first in line when registration opens. No commitment, no obligation — just an early heads-up.

  • Forming a team? Tell us how many you’re bringing.
  • Looking for a team? We’ll connect you with captains who are recruiting.
  • Just curious? Tick “updates only” — we’ll only email when we have news.

How does team registration work?
Registration is per team, through PlayHQ. All teams must be registered before individual player registrations can be completed. Once your team is registered, your team contact receives the individual player registration link to pass on to players.
What nights are games played?
Mens and Womens competitions play on Monday nights. The new Senior Mixed competition is planned for Sunday evenings from 5:00pm, subject to team numbers. Exact game times are released via PlayHQ 24 hours prior to game day.
What happens on Melbourne Cup week?
During Melbourne Cup week, the Monday round moves to Wednesday 4 November 2026 so no games are missed. This is the only planned mid-week move — all other rounds run on the usual Monday. Note also that on Labour Day (Mon 8 Mar 2027) the round plays Tuesday 9 March instead.
Competitions & Divisions
How are divisions decided?
The Association targets a minimum of six teams per division and creates as many divisions as necessary for an even, balanced competition. Divisions aren’t fixed in advance — they’re shaped from the teams that enter and the results of the grading rounds, so every team ends up at a level where games are genuinely competitive.
What is the 3-Stage Competition Model?
Seniors use the same three-stage approach as the junior competition for fairer draws. Stage 1 — Grade (Rounds 1–2): mini-games only, used to assess team strength; no ladder. Stage 2 — Validate (Rounds 3–5): full games begin; official ladder starts; grading adjustments can still be made after each round. Stage 3 — Season (Rounds 6–15): divisions are locked; every result counts; finals eligibility applies. The model was piloted in Winter 2026 and refined for Summer 2026/27 following a formal review with senior competition stakeholders and community feedback.
How does the finals series work?
The top 4 teams in each division qualify for finals. Semi-Finals run across two weeks (1st v 4th and 2nd v 3rd), with winners advancing to the Grand Final by 23 March 2027. Finals are played in the same locked divisions as Stage 3. There is no home-court advantage — venues are allocated based on competition needs.
Senior Mixed
What is Senior Mixed and when does it run?
Senior Mixed is a new, inclusive mixed competition planned for Sunday evenings from 5:00pm. Every team fields a mix of male and female players, with a minimum of two female players on court at all times. It’s a single social-competitive grade with a Top-4 finals series. It will run subject to team numbers — register your interest in the Senior Mixed section above.
Can I register interest as an individual, not a full team?
Yes. Use the Expression-of-Interest form above and select “looking to join a team” — we’ll connect you with captains who are recruiting. You can also select “just want updates” if you’re curious but not ready to commit.
Fees & Behaviour
Have fees changed for this season?
No — fees are unchanged for Summer 2026/27. Senior registration is per player, paid through the team’s PlayHQ link once the team is registered. The Annual Participation Licence (APL) is managed by Basketball Victoria; if you played last season your licence may already be active — check with your team contact before paying.
What is the Behavioural Management Framework?
The BMF applies across both junior and senior competitions. A behavioural technical foul resulting in ejection carries an automatic one-game suspension from the following round; abusive spectators are issued a formal warning card as the first step of a clear escalation process, up to venue ejection if the behaviour continues. It exists to keep a safe, respectful environment for every player, coach, official and spectator.
Association Policy

Behavioural Management Framework.

The WBA’s Behavioural Management Framework applies across both Junior and Senior competitions. Our goal is a safe, respectful environment for every player, coach, official, and spectator.

Player & coach ejections

Any player or coach who receives a behavioural technical foul and is ejected from a game will receive an automatic one-game suspension, effective from the following round.

Spectator warning cards

Spectators who are abusive toward game officials will be issued a formal warning card — the first step in a clear, consistent escalation process.

Escalation & venue ejection

If abusive behaviour continues after a warning card, a team/bench technical foul will be awarded, followed by ejection from the venue if the behaviour does not cease.
